“Krnica Livada” translates loosely as “the meadow/pasture of Krn”, Krn being one of the prominent mountains of Slovenia’s Julian Alps, the range being shared with Italy’s extreme North East. And, indeed, this meadow is nestled in a valley Slovenia’s North West corner, bordering Italy to the West and Austria to the North.
Slovenia’s as-yet-unspoiled alpine valleys are so beautiful that you could almost point your camera in a random direction and start shooting - even then, you’d be bound to come away with at least one decent photo. On second thoughts, given the current price of film…
Perhaps better to start walking down via the forest track from the nearby Koča v Krnici to step out onto the wide, open pasture and catch the soft, morning light breaking through the peaks above. Load your Mamiya 6451 with a roll of Ektar and stand in the midst of a patch of ferns, looking back towards the mountains and letting the film’s excellent highlight handling soak up the rays.
